Hello Janet
Alfred Allen Eldridge was baptised at Battle parish church on 6 April 1856, son of Emery Eldridge and Emily (maiden name Wood). Emery and Emily married at Battle parish church on 9 September 1843.
Emery Eldridge was baptised at Battle on 22 December 1822, son of Thomas Eldridge and Elizabeth (maiden name not known).
My gr gr grandfather is Samuel Eldridge (bap Battle 22 February 1790), brother of your Thomas Eldridge (bap Battle 10 March 1780). They were sons of William Eldridge and Sarah Potter.
So, we’re distant cousins!
I have lots of info on Eldridges at Battle so happy to help further.
Kind regards
Caroline

Hi Janet
I’m repeating the message I sent to you via the Westfield site as our Eldridge families are from Battle originally and the info may be helpful to other Eldridge researchers.
” I’ve got Eldridge births from the GRO Indexes up to 1927 so far, and looking at 1919-1927 there are no further Eldridge birth registrations where the mother’s maiden name is Wright.
Take a look at Robert Eldridge’s excellent website
www2.hunterlink.net.au/~ddrge/genealogy/families.html
You’ll find our Eldridge tree on there, including Emery’s family. Bob is always keen to hear from Eldridge researchers and happy to receive new info and correct any mistakes. His e-mail address is at the bottom of the website page.”
Best wishes
Caroline
Hello Caroline,
Interested to find someone with the surname Lancaster on the same page as the Eldridges. My mother was born Mavis Lancaster (her side all from the Burnley area). She married Dennis Charles Eldridge (most unhappily, I’m afraid).
Now, my Eldridges have been traced back in some detail by Robert Eldridge in Australia, he has us back to Thomas Eldridge, who married Hannah. Dates missing. They had a son, John Eldridge (1754-1829) who married Ann (?). I’m directly descended.
The first names “Thomas” and “Christopher” crop up often in our line.
So far as I know, by the mid-1800s these Eldridges were in London. Several were in the Royal Navy.
I wonder if anyone has Thomas Eldridges and/or Christopher Eldridges back there in Battle that might tie in.
My grandparents lived in the Medway towns, I went to school in Chatham. For some reason, we’ve wandered up to Northumberland.
Thanks, folks!
Ross Eldridge
Fun stuff, isn’t it?
Caroline,
I tried to go to this website, but could not access it. In the 1881 Census, Robert ELDRIDGE (46), Farmer of Norton Farm, Battle was recorded there with his mother-in-law, Mary Hammond DOBELL (59) in the household; she was the niece of one of my daughter’s ancestors, Lucy CLOUTT (nee HAMMOND) (c1795-1838). I am interested in contacting descendants of Robert’s family.
Regards,
Vincent Tickner
Hello Vincent
The website has moved since I left that message. It’s now at
http://members.iinet.net.au/~rgkje/eldridge/families.html
Robert Eldridge (1837-1913) was the son of Robert Eldridge and Mary Overy. He was married to Mary Sophia Jenner in 1869 and then following her death in 1879 he remarried to Mary Georgina Dobell in 1880.
The family is included on the website.
Best wishes,
Caroline
Dear Caroline,
Thank you. I am trying to contact Robert G. Eldridge in Australia to follow this up.
Happy New Year,
Vincent
