Are you one who visited Ninfield a few years ago also researching the family? Our history society (Ninfield Local History Group) organised a meeting. You should contact them on facebook or their website to see what they may have.
Sir, many thanks. I plan to visit soon, but have never been to your area. Thank you for replying.
Sincerely,
Todd
Happy to help Todd. As you mentioned the “Battle” area, do you know where specifically you are researching? Battle and District History Society also have extensive records, as do many of the surrounding villages. What do you have in the 1780’s for the Sargent family in Sussex? That may help set in motion places to visit, things to do etc.. Regards, Kevin
Again, thank you very much for the assistance. What I know, is my ancestor John Sargent was born in Hastings/Battle abt 1782. John Sargent was married to Susannah Luff on 6 Jul 1805 at the parish of Beckly. His father and his grandfather name was also John Sargent, both farmers from the surrounding area. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Todd
Hi Todd – I realise this is a few years on since your request, but I’ve only just spotted it. But your John Sargent’s father may be John William Sargent (b. 1853) and his father John Sargent (b. 1826 and married Harriet b. 1831) and his father James Sargent (b. 1781 and married to Dinah b. 1786). All of whom I believe to have been from the Battle area. The family were largely agricultural labourers.
Hi Sue and thank you for your reply. So many John Sargent’s, who knew….The John I’m looking for was born in 1782, his father and his father were both named John but details are unknown. As a fellow Sargent, have you done DNA testing?
Regards,
Todd Sargent
Todd – my apologies for getting over-excited, I was a century out! Clearly the Sargents had a strong family presence in Battle. Not DNA tested yet. 🙂
