Battle in East Sussex Town Guide

Senlac Field / Hill

Jill Ramsey: Dear Jill,

I am just a casual visitor to the Battle web site and can’t answer all your questions but can some.

I’m pretty sure that Senlac Field or Senlac Hill as I was told at school history lessons is basically adjacent to the town of Battle, and a little way to the west of Hastings, which is now a busy sea-side tourist town with B&Bs and hotels galore.

Hope this information is of interest to you, and please forgive me if I’ve mis-informed you.

    Dear Jill
You were asking about the location of Senlac Hill.
Battle Abbey is right in the centre of Battle and was built on the site of the battle by order of William the Conqueror.
The actual battlefield lies behind the abbey and is owned by English Heritage.
There are plenty of B&B’s in Battle within easy walking distance of the Abbey.
I hope you enjoy your visit to Battle, but please do stay in Battle, not Hastings.
